As a student, one becomes a very easy target of the heat waves of Delhi. Summer illness not only effect their mental and physical health. But also their College schedule and has adverse effect on their academic scores. This problem looks inevitable but when we dig a little deep and use some effective tactics and preventive measures, one can remain cool and at ease even amidst the most scorching days.

Here are some recommendations to help you combat the heat and maintain your well-being during the sweltering summer period.

Maintain Adequate Hydration:

Adequate hydration is crucial for remaining cool and healthy in the summer heat. Consume ample water throughout the day. An average student should drink minimum of 3 litres of water a day.Avoid excessive intake of caffeinated or alcoholic beverages. I know it is a hard thing to do as surving in college without energy boost is tricky. But we need to understand that caffeine and intoxications can contribute to dehydration. To contribute to your hydration level incorporate water-rich fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, cucumber, and oranges into your diet to enhance hydration levels.

  1. Hydration

Dress Suitably:

Opt for lightweight, loosely fitted attire in light hues to deflect sunlight and heat away from your body. Natural fabrics like cotton and linen are breathable materials that can aid in keeping you cool. Try to find clothes which suits to your aesthetic but also is practical for the heat.

Additionally, wearing a cap and sunglasses can offer supplementary protection against the sun’s rays.

Seek Shelter:

Whenever feasible, seek refuge in shaded areas to evade direct exposure to sunlight and minimize the risk of heat-related ailments. Schedule outdoor activities for the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. If outdoor exposure is unavoidable during peak heat hours, take regular breaks in shaded locations to relax and cool down. Do not think that roaming on the open roads in the noon will make you cool rather it will make you a patient in the nearby hospital.

Hide from sun

Utilize Sun Protection:

Prior to venturing outdoors, apply sunscreen with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) to exposed skin, and reapply it every two hours. Ultraviolet (UV) rays can induce sunburn and heighten the likelihood of skin cancer, underscoring the importance of shielding your skin from sun-induced damage. No matter the gender everyone needs to protect their skin and focus on their health. As the students of an esteemed university the gender biasness of skincare should not be done.

Ensure Home Comfort:

Employ fans, air conditioners, or evaporative coolers to uphold a comfortable indoor temperature. Draw curtains or blinds during periods of intense sunlight to obstruct heat and sunlight from infiltrating your home. Consider employing reflective window films to diminish heat absorption and maintain a cooler indoor environment without escalating energy expenditures. Try to make your room or house as airy and refreshing as possible.

Have light and fresh food :

I know momos and that hot piping tea is a temptation and it is very hard to stay away from them. But we need to realise that when your body is already suffering so much in heat adding more heat and spice to it won’t do any goo. Focus on light, invigorating meals that are easily digestible and won’t weigh you down in the heat. Indulge in salads, chilled soups, and fresh fruits to sustain hydration and nourishment. Indulging in fast food for once in a while is not a bad idea but making it a daily habit will adversely affect one’s body.

Engage in Refreshing Showers or Baths:

Reinvigorate yourself swiftly by indulging in a refreshing shower or bath with cold water. This can facilitate a reduction in body temperature and furnish temporary relief from the heat. It doesn’t mean wasting water or misuesing the non renewable resources but one should take regural baths . As a hosteler it is a difficult task to bathe regularly but it is not impossible. Try to do it for the sake of your health and others.

Incorporating a few drops of essential oils such as peppermint or eucalyptus can augment the cooling sensation and leave you feeling rejuvenated.
