UGC releases guidelines for Internships during lockdown

UGC releases guidelines

The University Grants Commission (UGC) had recently ordered colleges and universities to engage their students to take up online internships. It has asked them to decide for the students to take up other activities related to their project work as well. The notice which was released on Monday by the UGC directed the vice-chancellors and principals of various universities and colleges to follow certain guidelines.

The following guidelines have been issued:

  1. Allow the students to take up ‘online internships/ activities’ including the activities that can be carried out digitally or otherwise from home.
  2. Engage them to work as interns on ongoing projects.
  3. Delay the start date for the internship.
  4. Reduce the period of internship clubbing with assignments etc.

The notice also stated, “As per the letter, it was made clear that the guidelines are advisory in nature and the Universities may accordingly plan their activities keeping in view the safety and interest of our stakeholders, giving highest priority to the health of all concerned, while adopting and implementing the Guidelines.”

The guidelines that were only to be taken as a suggestion and it is dependent on the university whether they take action regarding the same. Internships have been an integral part of the learning process. Hence, the UGC wants to make sure that the health of students should not be at stake.

During the lockdown where students have moved from pen and paper to digital learning, the UGC wants to make sure that the students get proper guidance while taking up work from home internships. Going out for internships amid the ongoing pandemic might be too dangerous and would violate the restrictions imposed by the government.

The educational institutions have been shut down since the government announced the lockdown. The lockdown that has been extended till 17th May and schools and colleges are supposed to remain closed till further notice.
