LITMUS 2015: NARRATIVES OF CONTEMPORANEITY IN INDIA
‘Litmus’ the annual fest of the Department of English at Lady Shri Ram College for Women
saw an enthusiastic opening on 27th of February 2015. The theme is Narratives of
Contemporaneity in India. The two days fest will go on till 28th of February. The event
consists of six sessions in total with a photo exhibition going on simultaneously. Apart from
paper presentations by various B.A. and M.A. students of the department, there are a host of
interesting talks such as: ‘SELF AND THE NATION’, ‘NON LITERARY NARRATIVES’, ‘POPULAR
AND THE CANONICAL’ to name a few.
The first day began by an introductory talk by Professor Aditya Nigam which was immediately
followed by a session on the non-literay narratives which one can find in India today.
Another session had a talk by a senior reporter of the newspaper Khabar Lahariya which is an
Indian newspaper, published in certain rural dialects of Hindi, including Bundeli and Avadhi.
Initially seen as a women-only publication, it now covers local political news, local crime
reports, social issues and entertainment, all reported from a left-wing and feminist
perspective.
The second day begins with the issue which is perhaps the most debated upon in any English
Department – popular fiction versus the canonical texts. Another important discussion which
will take place on this day is that of Language and Translation debate. There will be a poetry
reading session following the talk, by Dr. Akhil Katyal. The fest ends on the second day by a
performance put up by the students of the department.
