Attack on JNU Leader, Umar Khalid

An unidentified man, wielding a gun, attacked Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid outside the Constitution Club of India in Delhi on Monday, afternoon.

The incident took place outside the Constitution Club where he had come for an event titled ‘Khauff Se Azaadi’ organised by an organisation named ‘United Against Hate’, it featured speakers like lawyer Prashant Bhushan, late Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula’s mother Radhika Vemula, suspended Gorakhpur hospital doctor Kafeel Khan, murdered Delhi youth Ankit Saxena’s father Yashpal Saxena and others.

According to eyewitnesses, the assailant also fired a shot while fleeing though Khalid’s friends tried to apprehend him leaving Umar Khalid unhurt.

Speaking about the incident, Umar Khalid said, “It is ironical that it happened as I have come to participate in an event titled ‘Khauff Se Azaadi’ (Freedom from Fear). As there is an atmosphere of fear, If you speak against the government you will be branded and then anything could happen to you.”
