When are we expecting schools and colleges to reopen?

As the nation-wide lockdown has been extended by 30 days more by the government in the evening, students need to check when they’ll be back to school and their college.

On the evening of 30 May 2020, the home ministry has released the rules and regulations for lockdown 5.0. The rules have been according to the phases.

Phase 1: In phase 1 all religious places in the town will be reopened with hotels and restaurants. The opening of shopping malls is also expected by the 8th of June. Wearing masks and sanitizing will remain mandatory.
Phase 2: The government has indicated that schools and colleges will be opened in the second phase. The decision will be in consultation with the State government. And the government has advised the State Governments/UT administrations to take advice from parents and stakeholders at an institutional level. The decision of opening schools, coaching, and other educational centers will be based on the feedback of the parents. And the feedback session will be done in July. So as mentioned earlier, colleges and schools are likely to be reopened on the 15th of July.

By the recent update on exam conduction, its clear that decision on first and second year is still pending but the tentative schedule for third years is released. And CBSE Board exams for grade 12 students, for reaming 29 subjects papers will be beginning from July first week in their own schools respectively.

The government also released the guidelines on the functioning of these activities:

The intra-state and inter-state movement prohibition have been removed completely. Now the movement is blocked from midnight from 9 pm to 5 am. Between these hours, if required then only emergency vehicle will be moving. Movement is free for the rest of the time.


Metro Rail and international air services will be resumed from June 1. Cinema halls, Gymnasium, swimming, and entertainment parks services will too resume from June 1. All these activities are included in phase three and will be opening soon after the consultation of health ministry guidelines.
Nothing will be open in containment zones. However lockdown shall continue to be implemented, also these areas will be under the guidance of States and UTs, in light of their evaluation of the circumstance, may forbid certain activities outside the containment zones, or force limitations as esteemed vital, the new rules state.
